Laser Ion Sources

The method of laser resonance step-wise ionization of atoms is widely used for ion beams production. Laser Ion Sources (LIS) are used in many types of research and applications. In the process of step-wise resonant photoionization of an atom, the ionization threshold Eion can be overcome by consecutive absorption of several photons. In the case of three-step ionization, the excitation of the atom proceeds resonantly if the lasers are tuned to the transitions between atomic states with energies Ei:

, , .

In the last step of excitation, a transition to the ionization continuum or to an autoionizing state can be used.

Since each element has its unique energy level structure, the step-wise ionization process is highly selective. Using lasers with narrow line-widths, isotopic and nuclear isomeric selectivity can be accomplished.

DelMar Ventures develop and supply custom made Laser Ion Sources (LIS). Our research and development team has more than twenty years of experience in development of Laser Ion Sources for world class facilities. Some of the examples are presented below.

Laser Ion Sources may be developed for about 80% of the total number of chemical elements. Check if we have a solution for an element you need.

Laser Ion Sources for on-line Mass-Separators

Two types of selective laser ion sources (LIS) are applied at on-line mass-separators: a buffer gas cell LIS and a hot cavity LIS. These sources provide both high selectivity and high efficiency of the ionization process. At the ISOLDE/CERN facility short-lived isotopes of Ag, Mn, Zn, Be, Ni, Cu were studied using a hot cavity LIS and a system of pulsed copper vapor and dye lasers.
