Neutron Literature>Fast Neutron Activation Analysis
System
Customized for the Non-destructive Identification
of Explosives and Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs).
Applications
- Main Application: Chemical Warfare Agent and Explosive
Identification by Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA)
Neutron induced gamma spectroscopy is used for the detection of explosives and
chemical warfare agents in ammunition such as bombs and shells without container opening
with the risk of CWAs emission.
Other applications:
- trace element "fingerprinting"
- control of gold slugs and gold containing materials
- detection of components of metals and alloys
- detection and control of nuclear material content
- ecological monitoring of environment, control of agriculture production
- detection of poison and other toxic substances without container disclosure
Method description
- A pulsed neutron generator, based on Deuterium – Deuterium
reaction, which does not emit radiation if switched off, is used as the source.
- Reactions of neutrons with the contents of shells result in substance specific gamma
emission which are characteristic for the elements and their identification.
- In contrast to explosives, chemical warfare agents contain the key elements chlorine,
arsenic, sulfur, phosphorus and fluorine which allows to differ them.
- This method is well suited for the detection of any chemical warfare agent; old ones
produced during the World War I and World War II well as for modern chemical agents.
Components of the Neutron Induced Gamma Spectrometer
Pulsed Neutron Source
The pulsed neutron generator is easy to transport and radiation protection is only needed
during analysis time.
Detection system
Electrically cooled HPGe-detector with high efficiency fast signal progressing unit.
Computer
PC with software for the control of neutron generator, detector and ammunition holder; and
software for data evaluation and substance identification.
Ammunition holder
Preprogrammable adaptor for all types of shells.
