Dove prisms are used as image rotators in a variety of optomechanical systems. Object and it inverted image created by Dove prism lie on common axis. As the prism is rotated around an axis parallel to hypotenuse face, the image passing through will rotate at twice the angular velocity of the prism. Light entering the Dove prism must be parallel or collimated, because the length of the prism is typically four or five times the height of the prism. The hypotenuse face of a dove prism is the face of the largest area. Normally the Dove prism is used in the total internal reflection (TIR) mode, with the hypotenuse face unaluminized. Cleanliness of this face is important.
