The fundamental formula for a thin lens was discovered by Edmund Halley and is also known as the Gaussian lens formula:

is the distance from the lens to the object and
is the distance from the lens to the image.
For glass and fused silica optics n is about 1.5 That gives simple relation between focus length and radius of curvature for thin plane convex lens: f= 2R.
